Griffon

Griffons are enormous flying beasts that can be found throughout the Mortal Realms. They have feathered, leonine bodies with the wings and heads of fierce eagles. These creatures with enormous wingspans are both inspiring and terrifying and are often prized above all other mounts.[1c][2][3][4a][7a]
Biology
The most common variety of Griffon employed by the forces of Order is the Azyrite Breed which is native to the plains of the Realm of Azyr. These winged apex predators can be as loyal as they are deadly. They are feathered, avian-like creatures with leonine bodies, the wings and heads of eagles, and feet that have vicious talons.[4b][7a]
Varieties
- Azyrite Griffon: This is the most recognizable breed of Griffon and the one most often employed by the forces of the Free Peoples. They are fiercely loyal, a trait common amongst the beasts of Azyr employed by Sigmar's armies, and deadly mounts that can quickly devastate an enemy line. They are native to the many open plains of Azyr.[4b]
- Ghurish Griffon: These twin-headed terrors are used by the Battlemages of the Collegiate Arcane. They are an off-shoot of those Griffons of Azyrite Griffons that can be found in Ghur, noted for their great strength and aggression. This variety of Griffon can also be found in the Realm of Ghyran.[4a]
- Owl-breed Griffon: A breed of griffon whose flight feathers are renowned for their silence.[9a]
- Snow Griffon: A breed of griffon hunted by the Icebone Warclan of the Skyblind Tundras.[8a]
Other
- Gloom-sky Griffon: An elusive beast believed to have been a thing of myth, until it was grounded by the Bonegrinz Warclan.[6a]
- Lode-Griffon: The Lode-Griffon was a massive, monstrous Godbeast that had a countenance similar to that of the Griffons of Azyr and Ghur.[5a]
Military
The most prominent faction to use them are:
- Freeguild mounted by Freeguild Generals, often armoured on their chests and heads and prized above all other mounts.[2]
- Collegiate Arcane mounted by Amber Battlemages, often have heraldic devices composed of skulls, totems and other bestial object as well as a pair of twin heads.[3][1b]
- Swifthawk Agents mounted by High Wardens, often more sleek and nimble than those of other armies.[1c]
