Skaven Clan
Skavendom is divided into a hierarchal society, that is separated into what is known as the Great Clans, each having their own specialisations, troops, armaments and methods of waging war.[1a][2c]. The chaotic societies formed by these clans are ruled by violence and treachery, as each Great Clan vies for domination. Each of Great Clan is divided into millions of smaller clans, scattered across the Mortal Realms and beyond.[2c][2d]
Ruling over all of these clans is the Council of Thirteen, a council with twelve seats for the rulers of the mightiest clans in Skavendom, and a thirteenth symbolic seat for the Great Horned Rat. Or so the council believes, in truth the whole of the Skaven race is manipulated by the Shadow Council, thirteen Verminlords who direct the skaven from within the horrifying sub-realm known as the Deepengnaw.[2c] The power structures within both councils are ever in flux, constantly changing as clans and Verminlords fight for power. With only the seat on the Council of Thirteen belonging to the Great Horned Rat and Skreech Verminking's position on the Shadoe Council being secure.[2c]
Great Clans
Every clan of Skaven is part of one of the Great Clans, or else vassalized to one. It has been said that the Great Horned Rat brought the Skaven to the Mortal Realms in his mouth, scattering them in the darkest corners of the Realms. These are known as the First Clans, the precursors of the Great Clans, and the Masterclan.[2d] It is believed that as many as thirteen Great Clans were first brought to the Realms.[2a]
All the Clans originate from the following Great Clans:
- Eshin: Assassins and saboteurs.[2d]
- Moulder: Breeders of horrifying beasts.[2d]
- Pestilens: Religious fanatics dedicated to disease and pestillence.[2d]
- Skryre: Arcane engineers, who employ a wide variety of unstable weaponry.[2d]
- Verminus: Are the most numerous, formed of petty overlords and teeming hordes beyond count.[2d]
Some of the Great Clans were destroyed or disappeared since they were brought to the Mortal Realms.[2a] Of those the following are known:
- Tichritt: Known for their arrogance and use of chronomantic weaponry. They were destroyed by Sigmar and his allies after they destroyed the Endless Kingdom in the Age of Myth.[2a]
- Ikk: Known for their savagery and rivalry with Verminus. They were destroyed by the Frothjaw Plague released by the Pestilens during the First Great Skaven Civil War in the Age of Chaos.[2a]
- Shrykt: The entire Clan gathered in a Realmgate in Aqshy and disappeared through it.[2a]
- An unknown number of as of yet unnamed Great Clans. It is claimed that originally there were 13 Great Clans, so by subtracting the known Great Clans, the maximum number of unnamed Great Clans is five.[2a]
