Horse

Horse are a species of quadruped animal used by many races within the Mortal Realms as mounts.

Breeds

Aelven Purebreed

Aelven Purebreeds or Aelven Steeds are a breed of horses primarily used by the aelven as mounts for cavalry or to pull chariots. The following are a list of several factions that use these mounts and how they use them:

• Order Draconis use them as mounts for Dragon Blades and Dragon Nobles, after shooding their hooves with Ithilmar.^[6b][6c]
• Swifthawk Agents use them to pull their Swifthawk Chariots or ride on their back as Reavers.^[6d][7]
• Eldritch Council Archmages occasionally ride Purebreeds to battle.^[6e]

Cannibal-horse of the Caldera

Partially reptilian steeds that will devour anything that falls beneath their scything hooves, even their own riders. The Horse-Lords of the Caldera are little better than their fearsome horses. ^[5]

Chaos Steed

Chaos Steeds are the ill-tempered horses ridden by the marauder horse-tribes that ravage the Mortal Realms.^[6a][9]

Grave Steed

Grave Steeds are a breed of large horses native to the Realm of Shyish with sturdy builds, dark grey pelts, bone-white hooves and lank manes that always blow in an ethereal wind. They are used as draught horses, most commonly for funeral processions but also tend to be used as work animals but the unnaturally gloomy aura they give off mean most stablehands are not comfortable tending them. As natives of Shyish they are not spooked by spirits making them useful for Dawnbringer Crusades in the Realm of Death for dragging floating Metaliths.^[18]

Nightmare

Nightmares are nightmarish horses used by the various factions of Death:

• Deathmages use them as mounts for Necromancers.^[6m]
• Soulblight use them as mounts for Blood Knights and Vampire Lords.^[17a]

Shadowmare

Shadowmares or Dark Steeds are horses native to the Realm of Ulgu, they are swift, relentless, red eyed and obsidian-hooved.^[3a][6g] The following are a list of several factions that use these mounts and how they use them:

• Shadowblades use them as mounts by the Dark Riders.^[6g]
• Daughters of Khaine use them as mounts by the Doomfire Warlocks. They are armored war horses with evil-looking spurs on each leg, runes emblazoned on their flanks and enormous vicious teeth.^[2]
• Scourge Privateers use pairs of them to draw their Scourgerunner Chariots.^[4][6h]

Steed of Nulahmia

Steeds of Nulahmia are a breed of coal black, predatory horses of Neferata and her servants claim that no faster steeds exist than those bred in Nulahmia. Even the hardened Champion of Chaos Ahazian Kel was impressed by their speed, resilience and ferocity.^[1]

Steed

A breed of horses ridden by Freeguild Pistoliers and Freeguild Outriders into battle.^[13][14]

Warhorse

Warhorses are a breed of horses primarily used by the Free Peoples. The following are a list of several factions that use these mounts and how they use them:

• Freeguild use them as mounts by Freeguild Generals.
• Devoted of Sigmar use them as mounts by their Warrior Priests or a pair to pull their War Altar of Sigmar. Their hooves are shod with Steel.^[6i][6j]
• Collegiate Arcane use pairs of them to pull their arcane war machines, like the Celestial Hurricanum and the Luminark of Hysh.^[6k][6l]

War Steed

War Steeds are powerful, muscular dark destriers that pull Chaos Chariots in pairs or are ridden by Chaos Knights into battle. Some have grown horns.^{[6f][8][10][11]}

Xintilian Stallion

The Xintilian Stallions are steeds native to the Hyshian Great Nation of Xintil. They are tamed by the Dawnriders of the Lumineth Realm-lords, forming deep bonds that allow each to instinctively know what the other will do a moment before they do it. ^[16a]

Other

• The horses of the Vurm-tai nomads are spotted, long-limbed and equipped with boiled leather armor. The nomads used them to follow the migration routes of the Great Worms to pick what was left in their wake or raided the caravans that travelled in between them.^[1]
