Shatterland Floes

The Shatterland Floes form an archipelago that takes up much of southern Andtor in the Ghurish Heartlands.[1a]

Origins

The Shatterland Floes are actually very young, with the majority of the break-up of the region taking place in the past few centuries. A commonly accepted explanation for the archipelago formation - among Ghurish observers, at least - is that Andtor is re-configuring itself to meet the threat of Bjarl, which is approaching across the closing Krakensea. More conservative Azyrite scholars reject this hypothesis, but their alternative explanations do not impress the locals.[2a]

Geography

The islands resemble the cold, rocky tundras of mainland Andtor, and the sea between them is filled with icy slush. Icebergs crossing the Krakensea are ground up by the outer islands, leading to a complex, shifting landscape of ice floes throughout the archipelago. Andtor's defensive adjustments - or, if one prefers, the natural tectonic processes - are still ongoing, so even the islands change size, position, and numbers over time. [2a]

Wildlife

This boundary zone between the land and sea sees creatures from both regions, with the characteristic Andtorian ice-rock-flesh chimeric beasts competing with aquatic Krakensea predators for prey throughout the region.[2a]

Inhabitants

The biggest settlement in the archipelago is the town of Icebrow, named for the ogor Icebrow Hunters that wander the region. The townsfolk have a longstanding agreement with the ogors, providing warm food and a safe place to rest between hunts in return for the hunters keeping the most dangerous beasts away from them.[2a]
