The story begins with the Slayer, Gotrek Gurnisson vomiting up his breakfast, having been poisoned by his reluctant companion, Maleneth Witchblade. They head back into the Missed Striking, a tavern in the Stranglevines of the city. [1]

A distraught woman arrives and her husband, bewailing the loss of their child to a ghost of an ancient hero, now a Nighthaunt. Reluctantly Gotrek and Maleneth accompany a aged warrior-priest of Alarielle and an equally veteran Ranger from the Living City deep below the city. [1]

There they uncover not only a Skaven plot but the story behind the ghost. [1]
