Dispossessed are the remnants of the duardin Khazalid empires that were destroyed during the Age of Chaos and now forge new cities in the Mortal Realms. It is by their hand many of the God-King's sturdiest edifices and fortifications are raised and when battle calls they fearlessly march to war clad in shining gromril armour.[1][4a]

History

Age of Myth

During the Age of Myth many Khazalid Empires rose across the Mortal Realms, built inside vast mountain ranges and subterranean caverns. Ruled by worshippers of the smith-god Grungni, they mastered blacksmithing and masonry, constructing magnificent underground holds glittering with gems, gold and impervious gromril.[4a]

Age of Chaos

During the Age of Chaos the armies of Chaos overran many of the Khazalid Empires forcing many Warden Kings to lead their still proud but battered people into exile with Sigmar, leaving the dying embers of the once mighty Khazalid Empires. They began calling themselves the Dispossessed in memory of their fallen holds and maintained the practices of smithcraft and rune-shaping that had long been the source of their power so that Sigmar's vision of reconquering the realms can be achieved. Like their ancestors they created mighty kingdoms beneath the Realm of Azyr. [1][4a]

Age of Sigmar

When Sigmar finally reopened the gates, the Dispossessed came forth with his Stormcast and other warriors not only to fight but also to build. Whenever the Stormcast conquered a Realmgate the Lords-Castellant would man it while the Dispossessed and the Ironweld build fortified towns, which would later grow into free cities, making sure the new cities have firm foundations. Their role in the Cities of Sigmar is not limited to construction and when an enemy fortress resists massed assaults or an infestation of skaven or grots is found beneath the earth, it is the Dispossessed who are called upon.[1][3a][4a]

Society

The labour clans of the Dispossessed, and the engineers of the Ironweld Arsenal, are the builders and architects of the Free Cities. Whenever a new Realmgate is secured, it is these sturdy labourers and engineers who are called forth to aid in building settlements around these vital gateways.[5b][5c] Though it is the Dispossessed who lay the first stones within these free cities and it is they who decide what the best layout for the city's defenses will be, often acting as advisors to the Lord-Ordinators and Lord-Castellants assigned to lead the construction of the Stormkeeps.[3a][6a]

While they are more than willing to work to build new bastions of, and restore those destroyed in the Age of Chaos, Order and Sigmar's grand civilization, the Dispossessed clans ever hope to retake and restore their own ancestral holds and cities.[5a]

Despite appearances to the contrary, the Dispossessed are as culturally diverse as their human peers as they too once had civilizations scattered across every corner of the Mortal Realms. There are those such as the Grunndrak Clan who still hold to the traditions and values of the Khazalid Empire, but there are also those who have developed their own unique cultures such as the Gazul-Zagaz.[5a]

Regardless of the cultural differences they have developed, most of these clans carry on the ancient methods of smithcraft and rune-shaping that has long been one of the greatest sources of power among their people.[3a]

The warriors of Dispossessed clans are accustomed to many types of warfare. They are renowned for their skill in the arts of siegcraft, both as defenders and as attackers, and many of their tunnel-fighters have been known to be called upon to rid Free Cities of infestations of grots and skaven.[3a][6a]

Much like their peers among the other leading factions of the Free Cities, the Dispossessed clans are more than willing to employ mercenaries and adventurers to help search for and explore the fallen holds of their ancestors, or to aid in retaking artefacts found within them.[5a]

Many of the Dispossessed Clans live, work, and thrive within the Cities of Sigmar. But other clans have chose to reclaim old holds and karaks, who build new ones not far from their allies within the Free Cities. Other Duardin Clans managed to survive the Age of Chaos and keep control of their holds, but still form close ties with the Free Cities and structure themselves similarly to the Dispossessed.
