Daughters of Khaine is a deadly aelf cult that worships the god of battle and death, Khaine.[1]

Overview

In Azyrheim the Grand Conclave regard the daughters of Khaine with wary respect, rightfully considering the cults relationship with the Darkling Covens. Warrior queens rule the cult, fabled blood rituals keeping them strong and seemingly unaging. In battle they and their lithe Witch Aelf followers perform a gory dance of slaughter, feeding the enchanted cauldrons that accompany their warbands. [1] Bloodwrack Medusae ride atop shrines weaving powerful magics whilst shadowy Doomfire Warlocks gallop into battle on dark steeds.[2d]

A Temple of Khaine.

History

Age of Myth

  • Exiled by Malerion to the darkest region of the Shadrac Convergence, the Helleflux, Morathi found a small cult of Aelfs keeping alive the old beliefs into Khaine and the other gods of the World-That-Was. Morathi, while not a follower of Khaine herself, saw the potential in turning these people into her loyal followers. Using her mastery over illusions and magic she took the title of High Oracle of Khaine, the only one able to hear and interpret the will of their absent deity.[5a]
  • Convincing her followers that their god was slain in battle and can be reassembled by collecting the scattered relics of Khaine, Morathi sent out her agents into the Realms. This allowed her to collect powerful relics to enhance her own might. Foremost of them all, the Iron Heart of Khaine. Taken from the hoard of Kharybtar, father of the Kharibdysses, she got a taste of real divinity by claiming parts of Khaine's essence for herself.[5a]
  • Following Morathi's ascension to the position of High Oracle, the Daughters of Khaine begin their expansion across the Thirtheen Dominions of Ulgu. Many new sects rise and fall as they seek to undermine each other to gain the favour of their Bloody Handed God, and her High Oracle. Morathi manipulates these conflicts to shape the cult to her liking and take out those that might challenge her position.[5f]
  • While dedicated to the God of Murder, Khaine, there still exist many splinter faction within the Khainite religion dedicated to those aelven deities consumed by Slaanesh or otherwise destroyed long ago. Cults like the ones dedicated to the Crone Morai-Heg were once tolerated by the new High Oracle of Khaine. Yet, as she strengthen her grip over the Khainite cults so too were they pushed to the edges of society. At first the worship of other gods was simply discouraged, until they were ultimately outlawed and their followers supressed.[6a]
  • Once respected and welcomed by all sects, the nomadic seer-troupes of Morai-Heg were decried by Morathi as blasphemers and enemies of the Khainite faith itself. In less than a decade, the once powerful order was all but wiped out. All that was left of them were tales and rumours of a few Morai-Heg faithful holding out in the mist-shrouded wilds of Ulgu, waiting for their time of vengeance.[5f]
  • Morathi personally founds the temple of Ironshard of the Khelt Nar sect on top of the mountain known as Rothtor. Though beset by monsters and enemies from all side, the Khelt Nar sect grows rapidly.[5f]

Age of Chaos

  • The arrival of Chaos throws the Convergence into a bloody conflict between Aelfs and Chaos worshippers, known as the Cathtrar Dhule, especially the Daughters of Khaine, and the followers of Slaanesh.[2a] In the dark valleys, and shrouded woods of the Umbral Veil, hosts of khainite warriors, and Daemons of Slaanesh meet on bloody battlefields. One of the most ferocious leader of the Chaos hordes ravaging Ulgu was Luxcious the Keeper, destroyer of the temples of Neff-Taal, Prax Nar and Traith-Kine.[4b]
  • In an effort to combat the spread of the followers of Slaanesh in Ulgu, Morathi unleashes her Shadowmarked assassins, the Khainite Shadowstalkers.[5f]
  • The Battle of Liar's Spine saw Morathi and Malerion join forces to drive back the Daemon horde of Be'lakor. Seeking to drive a wedge between mother and son, Be'lakor used spies and turncoats at the courts of Hagg Nar and Druchiroth to sow discord. At first it appeared like his plots came to fruition when the covens of the Daughters of Khaine turned to leave the battlefield. Seeing victory in his grasps, Be'lakor committed his forces for a final assault, only to fall for the aelven trap as Morathi's forces turned around to crush the daemons between her and the legions of Greater Ulguroth.[5f]
  • Despite these victories, and the ferocious zeal of the Khainites, more and more temple-cities fell to the onslaught of Chaos. Even Hagg Nar itself was under siege by the dark hordes more than once. While the city was never taken, Morathi saw that she would not be able to fend off Chaos forever.[5a]

Age of Sigmar

Fleets from Hagg Nar and Misthåvn raiding the coasts of Klarondu
  • Sigmar the God-King was not unaware of Morathi's reputation as a schemer and backstabber, but the High Oracle presented herself as a changed woman. The dark times of the Age of Chaos have shifted her priorities, she now only desired to protect her flock. While many would have doubted her, the Daughters of Khaine threw themselves into battle over and over again in defence of their new allies.[5a]
  • Spreading a fungal infection across the Umbral Veil, the Gloomspite Gitz Madcap Shaman Nitbug Dribblesnot proclaims himself the new Loonking. Turning the valleys of Va-Leth into his dank, fungal kingdom. His reign came to an end as a war coven of the Khailebron sect striked at the heart of Dribblesnots realm, slaying the mad shaman after a short but ferocious battle.[4b]
  • As more and more cities of Order are founded in the centuries following the Realmgate Wars, so too does the cult of Khaine spread across the Realms. Temples and fighting pits honouring the Bloody Handed God are a common sight across the Cities of Sigmar.[5f]
  • As the Death rise across the Shadrac Convergence as the Necroquake erupts across the realms, the Cathtrar Dhule continues unimpeded. Only now with the undead hordes joining the bloody war in the shadows. Where the dead rose, so too did the khainites rise to meet them, fighting for the living with zeal and heroism.[3b][5a]
  • Morathi has long had eyes on the Free City of Anvilgard, having long laid the groundwork for her great betrayal and the conquest of the coastal city through her agents known as the Blackscale Coil. Few members of the Coil knew the true identity of the shadowy Visharhein, or Sovereoign, who led their organization, but nonetheless they played their part in weakening the city.[4b]
  • After her ascension Morathi-Khaine conquered Anvilgard, renamed it Har Kuron, and made it a vassal state of her empire. The newly renamed city is still a bastion of illicit trade, where Scourge Privateers and knights of the Order Serpentis ply their wares. But it has grown ever more dangerous and deadly, any who speak against the new regime or Morathi-Khaine are swiftly dealt with by shadowy blades seemingly hidden in every corner of the city.[4b]
  • Máthcoir, the Mother Cauldron, played an instrumental role in Morathi's schemes. Connected to the cauldrons born by the War Covens into battle, it was eternally refilling, representing the source of Morathi's power before her ascension. Not only did it sustain Morathi, it was also where she blended aelven souls, shadow magic and her own blood to create her Scáthborn handmaidens. Yet, it could not hold the form of the ascended Morathi. When she burst forth from it, the Mother Cauldron finally cracked. While the true extent of the damage is known to no one outside the inner most circle, whispers have started spreading of grotesque monsters hidden away in the depths of Kruthú.[5j]
  • During the height of the Earthquake God Kragnos's siege of Excelsis, sleek Wolfships bring Morathi and her host of warriors from Hagg Nar to the city's aid. In the end, it was Morathi aided by the ancient Slann Kroak that banished Kragnos and saved the City of Secrets for the time being. In the aftermath it was the returned Grungni that brokered an uneasy truce between Morathi and Sigmar.[5f]
  • The monstrous entity known as the Shadow Queen, born from the rift inflicted on Morathi's soul during her ascension, contains Morathi's fury, and bitterness. Locked in a struggle with her other half, the Shadow Queen alternates between lethargy and frenzied rage. Until it cumulated in an outburst that saw her bursting out the Helleheart and flying into the ulguan night. Still obsessed with the wounds inflicted on her by Kragnos in Excelsis, she now seeks vengeance, painting Ghur red with the blood of the Drogrukh.[5f]
  • While outwardly united behind their new goddess Morathi-Khaine, dissident is brewing in the shadows. Traditionalists that dismiss Morathi's teachings of reincarnation or resurrection as blasphemy. Most outspoken of those traditionalists was Hag Queen Agghaya of the Kraith. She marched upon Hagg Nar with no less than 9 Avatars of Khaine and decried Morathi-Khaine openly. When confronted by her, it only took Morathi a fling of her wrist and the iron golems turned on the Hag Queen, tearing her limb from limb. While this might have quelled open dissent, there are still those opposing her in the shadows. A group known as the Crone Heralds reject her as a false goddess and wage a shadow war against Morathi's Scáthborn agents.[5b]

Culture

Society

The Daughters divide themselves into Sects which worship different aspects of the lost god Khaine, within those sects they follow a strict hierarchy. At the pinnacle is Morathi, the High Oracle, she who speaks with the iron voice of the God and directly beneath her are the High Priestesses - Bloodwrack Medusae, Hag Queens and Slaughter Queens. Some Sects put Slaughter Queens above Hag Queens and vice versa.[2d]

The true Khainites are warriors and divided into two groups, the Scáthborn and the Sisterhood of Blood. The Scáthborn are only partially aelvish in form, souls stolen from the imprisoned god Slaanesh and reformed by Morathi in the Máthcoir - the great cauldron. The Sisterhood are naturally born Witch Aelves and Sisters of Slaughter and only amongst the Kraith are they ranked as highly as the Scáthborn although in all sects, Morathi may choose the most faithful and beautiful to be granted the high honour of being changed into a Medusae.[2d]

The duties of the Daughters of Khaine are not limited to bloody ritual and battlefield duties; they also serve as gladiators, sword-dancers, assassins, and spies.[3a]

Nearly every major free city hosts a sect of the Daughters of Khaine, also known as covenite sisters, and most host several. Chief amongst these is the eternal city of Azyrheim, which has elements of all major sects within it.[3a]

Morathi expects her sects to restrain their darker impulses within the domains of the God-King, and when situations get out of hand the High Oracle expects reparations to be paid and examples made of offenders.[3a]

Lowest of all are the Leathanam, the menial caste, and it is in this caste that the majority of the males can be found - Morathi having re-forged the weakest she recovered from Slaanesh into males and even the those now born into the world are also weak, their strength magically siphoned off to boost the Máthcoir and Morathi. A few males, however, have a connection to Ulgu and flourish; these are tolerated, but branded with control runes that they are told are defensive enchantments against Slaanesh.[2f][3a]

Religion

Krethusa, Seer of the Crone Heralds

Every female aelf is part of the many sects worshipping Khaine. Each sect differs in what specific aspect of the God of Murder they favour, but they are all devoted to him and Morathi.[5a]

The base component of the khainite society and religion are the temples, every temple has their own Cauldron of Blood, and their own Hag Queen or Slaughter Queen leading their congregation in their rituals and sacrifices.[3a].

The khainite faithful dont just follow their faith in secret inside their temples, but also out in the open. Colluseums are a common sight, even in Sigmarite cities. Here the Daughters of Khaine partake in ritualized combat, showing of their skill and strenght in front of the crowds.[5a]

In the early days while mostly dedicated to their god Khaine, there still exist many splinter faction within the Khainite religion. Dedicated to those aelven deities consumed by Slaanesh or otherwise destroyed long ago, Cults like the ones dedicated to the Crone Morai-Heg kept the memory of the old gods alive.[6a]

Once accepted, Morathi in her position as High Oracle of Khaine slowly pushed these cults to the edge. First disincentivizing the worship of anyone but Khaine, soon enough it was forbidden to even utter the name of another god. In the end, Morathi branded the once respected Morai-Heg worshipping nomadic prophets as blasphemers and enemies of Khaine. Wiping them out completely in a few short years.[6a]

Over the centuries, Morathi tightened her grip over the Daughters of Khaine. Promising a resurrection of their dead god, Morathi sent out her followers to collect powerful artifacts from the realms, fuelling her own ascension. So when she emerged from Máthcoir as their new goddess Morathi-Khaine, her followers readily accepted the new teachings.[5b]

Most of them, but not all. Traditionalists dismissed Morathi's teachings of reincarnation or resurrection as blasphemy. While Morathi managed to crush open dissent and solidify her position as their new god, even replacing statues of Khaine with her own image, she is also waging a shadow war against a group known as the Crone Heralds. Biding their time in the shadows, waiting for a time to tear down the false goddess[5b]

Major Temple-Cities

Hagg Nar

While small when compared to other empires in the Mortal Realms, the realms of the Daughters of Khaine are fiercely defended. For centuries the khainite faithful have zealously slaughtered those daring to trespass into their domain. So it is no surprise that the sacred temples of the different sects have grown to become well defended strongholds. Some of them have become famous well beyond the borders of Morathi's empire.

Hagg Nar

Hagg Nar; seat of Morathi's court and capital of her empire, Hagg Nar is the grandest of all the cities of the Daughters of Khaine. Once a lowly shrine shrouded by the Helleflux, it has grown to a true metropolis. Supplicants deliver tribute in the form of goods, or prisoners for the many arenas and ritual sacrifices. While humans, duardin and other races can be found in the outer districts, they have to obey Morathi's word all the same, for she tolerates no one questioning her authority.[5e]

Those that thing the great city of Hagg Nar might be a tempting target soon find their armies shattered against it's formidable defences. Protected by the treacherous waters of the Helleflux and the ruthless fleets of Scourge Privateers mercenaries will decimate any foe daring to approach the city. Even if they make landfall, they soon find themselves under attack from hidden watchtowers, Witch Aelves striking from sallying ports, or Khinerai swooping down from Hagg Nar's dark spires. Even the very bedrock of Hagg Nar has been infused with arcane protections and malicious curses by Morathi herself.[5e]

At the center of Hagg Nar stands the Helleheart, the great temple where Morathi holds court. A vast and imposing fortress stretching from the dark skies deep into the foundation of the city, filled with sacrificial chambers, gladiator pits and other dark secrets. Where other temple-cities still depict Khaine in its male aspect, ever since Morathi's ascension she only allows images of herself inside Hagg Nar.[5e]

Draichi Ganeth

Draichi Ganeth; the Tower of Blades. The dedication of the Kraith towards ritual combat caused their temple to resemble more an accumulation of conjoined arenas than a city. The fortress of the Draichi Ganeth dominates the the ashen desert of northern Fuarthorn for many miles around.[5e]

Each district of the temple-city has been turned into its own unique maze of hazards and tests. Here the sisters of the sect test their skills in different environments against prisoners and monsters bought back from triumphant War Covens. One might find oneself battling hungry sea-beasts in the Arena of Drowning, while at the same time others fight for survival in the Arena of Cinders and its infamous fire-spitters.[5e]

Where the arena's of the Executioner's Cult might be intricated, so barren are the quarters of the female aelfs and their servants. All so that they can fully dedicate themselves to their bloody craft.[5e]

Ironshard

Ironshard, also known as the Umbral Edifice is the stronghold of the Khelt Nar sect. Build on the flat-topped Rothtor mountain, the shadow-infused metal act as an almost impenetrable natural fortification. The rare Umbrium, sturdy and feather-light, infused with shadow magic, is used not just in the walls of the settlement, but also in the main export of the city. Artisans of Ironshard have long perfected the art of creating Kuirath blades from Umbrium. Infused with a mind-scouring curse, foes trying to assault Ironshard often find themselves staggered and disorenientated, making them easy prey for the formidable defences of the city.[5e]

Under almost constant assault of chaos-worshippers seeking to take the Umbrium for themselves, Ironshard is a bleak city, even when compared to other Temple-Cities. Litte thought is given to comfort, with most of the city focused on preparing for the inevitable next attack.[5e]

Har Kuron

Anvilgard shortly before being taken over and turned into Har Kuron

Har Kuron; once a City of Sigmar known as Anvilgard, now a citadel of the Daughters of Khaine. After years of plotting by the Blackscale Coil and the Sovereign, the Fall of Anvilgard happened in a single night. By dawn, the newly ascended Morathi-Khaine was the undisputed ruler of Har Kuron.[5c]

The truce brokered in the aftermath of the khainite conquest included safe passage for the people of Anvilguard, yet some have chosen to stay behind, living under the strict laws of the khainite faith. While ruled with an iron fist, and Scáthborn patrols ever present, Har Kuron is not a mere prison. Morathi desires worship. To achieve this goal, arenas and gladiatorial spectacle have become a common sight in Har Kuron. Many citizen of Har Kuron flock to the arenas to see High Gladiatrix and Witch Aelves show of their strenght and skill. Drunk on the bloody spectacle, more and more people become amendable to the rhetoric of khainite priests.[5c]

While the city has suffered from the brutal fighting during the Fall of Anvilgard, trade has returned despite the new rulers. Trade with Ulgu especially has been strengthened. Strange foods and drinks, or Misthåvn narcotics are now much more common than before.[8a]

Organization

A Khainite War Coven going into battle.

While the rituals and titles differ between the different sects of the Daughters of Khaine, they all share the same strict hierarchy. Either be a member and warrior of the khainite faith, or be a Leathanam, little more than a drone.[5g]

When the sects go to war, they will summon congregations of warriors known as War Coven. Larger sects might have hundreds of covens spread across dozens of temples, while smaller sects might be able to muster only a single coven.[5g]

Priests of Khaine

The Hag Queens and Slaughter Queens are the high priestesses of Khaine and the leader of their coven. They are in charge of leading the rituals and keeping their coven's most sacred artifacts. Their specific titles and degree of power differ between the different sects. This is seen in the Kraith, where War Covens are being lead by Slaughter Queens known as Bloodqueen.[5g]

  • Hag Queen: The priests known as Hag Queens guard the mysteries and rituals of their temple. Its the Hag Queens entrusted with the knowledge of crafting the sacred concoction known as Witchbrew.[5j]
  • Slaughter Queen: The warrior queens of the Khainite war covens. Slaughter Queens are chosen for their martial skills and fanaticism. In battle they wield dual blades known as the Blade of Khaine and the Deathsword, impued with the fury of Khaine, and the scorn of Morathi.[5j]
  • Cauldron of Blood: The Cauldrons of Blood are the greatest of the Daughters of Khaine war shrines, for it is said that they are gifts from Khaine himself. At least, this is Morathi's claim each time she gifts one of the great iron cauldrons to the temple of a newly-founded Khainite sect.[5j]
  • Avatar of Khaine: Black iron statues made by the Daughters of Khaine in the image of the god of war and murder, Kaela Mensha Khaine. Animated by bloody rituals of Khainite priests, Avatars march across the battlefield, spewing boiling blood and ripping apart the enemies of Khaine.[5j]

Scáthborn

Scáthborn, Trueborn or Shadowborn are formed from the aelf-souls rescued from the maw of Slaanesh. Reformed and shaped by Morathi herself, the Melusai and Khinerai are utmost loyal to her. Once hidden in dark corners or underneath magical illusion, with Morathi's ascension they now parade freely in the open.[5g]

  • Melusai Ironscale: Scáthborn leaders crafted from those souls that have hold onto their burning desire to enact revenge against their tormentor Slaanesh. Specially shaped by Morathi herself, these Melusai serve as her champions.[5l]
  • Blood Sister: The elite vanguard of the Khainite War Covens. Armed with terrible Kragaht war-masks and heavy glaives, these Melusai are some of the strongest warriors of the Daughters of Khaine. Yet, their most powerful weapon is their deadly Scáth touch. Even a light bruise of this will turn anyone into unmoving but still living crystal statues.[5l]
  • Blood Stalker: Morathi's elite Archers, each armed with a heartseeker bows, crafted from sentient Ashdusk Trees. The arrows fired from these bows have the uncanny ability to accurately pierce the heart of their target. While perfectly capable of normal speech, Blood Stalkers prefer to hunt down their prey in total silence. Instead they rely on graceful gestures and emphatic signals to convey complex tactics.[5l]
  • Khinerai Heartrender: Masked Scáthborn armed with barbed javelins that can impale a knight and their mount with a single devastating blow.[5n]
  • Khinerai Lifetaker: Wingend warriors specialized into decapitating foes with their cruel sickles in a single, devastating charge.[5n]

Medusas

  • Bloodwrack Medusa: Those Aelves selected for the Slith-onóir are transformed by the serpents of the Shadow Queen's crown into Bloodwrack Medusas. Monstrous in appearance, they are blessed with a portion of Morathi's strenght. The most loyal of Morahi's followers, they wield both sorcerous powers and a deadly gaze.[5m]
  • Bloodwrack Shrine: Some Bloodwrack Medusas are born into battle on top of magical chariots. The strange mirror known as Scáthmre channels their deadly gaze into an even more dangerous weapon. Those unlucky enough to come close to a Bloodwrack Shrine will fall to the ground, paralyzed by unimaginable torment.[5m]

Sisterhood of Blood

The members of the Sisterhood of Blood form the core of most cults. They are both the most commonly seen part of the khainite sects, taking part in public rituals and ritualised combat in the arenas, as well as the frontline warriors of the War Covens.[5g]

  • High Gladiatrix: Those Witch Aelfs or Sisters of Slaughter that have shown extraordinary skill and flair in the arena, they rise to the position of a High Gladiatrix. They dont take on positions of command, instead becoming living conduits of Khaine, spurring on those around them with crimson blessings.[5k]
  • Witch Aelves: Devoted servants of Khaine. They train tirelessly in military drills and ritual combat, as to them, combat and spilling blood is as sacred to them as reading scripture and daily rituals.[5k]
  • Sisters of Slaughter: Considered an extremist sub-cult even by their fellow Khainites, the Sisters of Slaughter bear masks of living metal. They dedicate their entire lives to melee combat, their whips spinning and cracking trough the as they tear the flesh from their foe's bones.[5k]

Shademarked

Morathi always has been a cunning schemer. She has no qualms to call on her network of spies, murderers and assassins if need be. These dark agents are collectively known as the Shademarked.[5g]

  • Khainite Shadowstalkers: Khainite Shadowstalkers are Morathi's trusted assassins and saboteurs. Chosen from the Daughters of Khaine, each is branded with the shademark, a sorcerous pact that grants supernatural abilities while binding their souls to the Shadow Queen’s eternal servitude.[5n]

Leathanam

There are few male aelfs inside the khainite sects of the Daughters of Khaine. Made from the most weak and broken souls rescued from Slaanesh, the Leathanam form a caste of often exploited menial labourers.[5m]

  • Doomfire Warlocks: Those few male Aelves born with a talent for magic can escape the live of the downtrodden Leathanam. Branded with the Dhaimkhyr, the Doomfire Warlocks race ahead of Khainite War Covens, harassing their foes with magical fire and sharp scimitars.[5m]

Sects

The Khainite faith is divided into a number of Sects, each of which focus on a particular interpretation or aspect of worship. Each sect has its own power base of temples and war covens but ultimately follows the dicates of Morathi in Hagg Nar.[2b]

  • Draichi Ganeth: The Bladed Killers. The best known sect and very familiar to all the citizens of the Sigmarite cities.[2e]
  • Hagg Nar: Daughters of the First Temple The Chosen of Khaine they control the greatest temple and artefacts of the Cult. [2e]
  • Khailebron: Famed amongst the cult as superlative Assassins.[2e]
  • Khelt Nar: Frequently attacked by followers of Chaos it is centred around a temple stronghold founded by Morathi herself.[2e]
  • The Kraith: The Crimson Cult, bloodthirsty killers even within their own cult.[2e]
  • Zainthar Kai: The Blood Saints - first and most revered of the Scáthborn.[4a]
