Aqua Ghyranis

Currency is a form of accepted money that can be exchanged for goods and services. Currency comes in many different forms including Fiat Currency, Commodity Currency, and Representative Currency. Many of the currencies of the Mortal Realms take the form of Commodity Currency, meaning the currencies are themselves trade goods.

Each of the Mortal Realms is brimming with commerce, much of which is done through bartering and trade. But with the re-opening of the Gates of Azyr and rise of the Cities of Sigmar as bastions of trade and civilization, many forms of Currency have become widespread.[1a]

Currencies Throughout the Realms

Aqua Ghyranis

Within the Free Cities the substance known as Aqua Ghyranis has become one of the most common and widely accepted forms of currency within Sigmar's Empire, largely replacing coinage.[1a] Aqua Ghyranis is heavily regulated through the use of Divination Plates, rune-covered devices that can be used to test the purity of Aqua Ghyranis without removing the water from their glass containers. Such devices are considered a necessity by any banks, counting houses, currency exchanges, merchants, or business owners using Aqua Ghyranis.[1a][17a]

The use of Aqua Ghyranis as a currency is not exclusive to Sigmar's Empire, as it is also occasionally used by those mortal kingdoms vassalized by the Ossiarch Empire, Grave-Empires of the Soulblight Gravelords, and other nations of Death.[20a]

Aqua Ghyranis is traded significantly less often among the mobs of Destruction than it is among the Free Peoples and their allies, as it is largely considered tasteless and its use as fertilizer is negligible among those who do little farming. Grots of the Gloomspite Gitz are known to hoard the substance, though they consider the glass phials and spheres that contain the substance much more valuable. Hobgrots meanwhile are known to steal and salvage what Aqua they find, happy to use it to supplement their many dodgy deals and trades, though they have been known to water it down or else re-fill glass containers with lesser liquids. Orruks and Ogors are willing to use Aqua for its healing properties, particularly in cases where Waaagh! or meat is in short supply.[42a]

During times of war, famine, and plague the value of Aqua Ghyranis can inflate radically. During such times alternative currencies are employed, such as the various forms of Realmstone found all across the Mortal Realms.[21a]

Glimmerings

Though the Glimmerings of Excelsis are not nearly as widespread as Aqua Ghyranis, they have nonetheless become well-known and highly valued across the Mortal Realms. Glimmerings are chips, or slivers, of the Spear of Mallus, a massive chunk of the World-That-Was protruding from the bay around which Excelsis was built.[1a][8a]

These shards serve as the primary currency within the city itself, serving as payment to many labourers and even members of the Freeguilds.[25a]

Glimmerings are a highly prized currency and commodity among both merchants and nobles from across the Mortal Realms, as each shard is imbued with the arcane power of prophecy and can be used in fortune-telling. On average a single shard is worth as much as a hundred drops of Aqua Ghyranis.[1a][8a] These small shards typically grant only small images of the future, and it usually takes a fist-sized chunk to perceive vivid visions of many futures yet to come.[26a]

Coinage in the Mortal Realms

Despite the ascendance of Aqua Ghyranis, coins made of precious metal are still used as an accepted currency in many markets across the Mortal Realms such as the Sky-ports of the Kharadron and even some Free Cities such as Excelsis and Greywater Fastness.[1a][2a][3] Fyreslayers are also known to accept gold coins in exchange for their services as mercenaries.[11a] To facilitate those merchants and establishments who prefer coinage, and other currencies besides, many Cities of Sigmar will have thriving currency exchanges, some of which double as banks.[6a][17a]

The metals most often used for coinage are copper, silver, and gold. These coins range wildly in terms of value, size, denomination, and abundance. Some, like the Comet, varieties are known to be minted in denominations of all three metals.[3][4a][7a][24a] Meteoric Iron is also occasionally used for minting coins, with Meteors and Motes being two well known examples.[2a][3] Still others, such as the Tatrak, are made of common metals like simple iron.[4]

Coinage made from gold is often considered of particular value, such coins often being considered high-end currencies. In some places, the wealth gained from receiving but a singular gold coin can convince mortals to take on dangerous tasks they'd refuse in most circumstances.[23b] Coins known to be minted from gold or gold alloys include Doubloons[4a], Quarter-Shares[7a], and Torope-Chaw made of Torope Gold.[2b] Sil

Coins of all varieties have their faces stamped with images, often the faces of ruling monarchs and other important personages of the nation or city the coins were minted in. In many cases, the value of a coin can depend as much on, or sometimes entirely on, these stamps as they do on the weight and contents of the coin.[20a][38a]

Various forms of coinage are also circulated throughout the Realm of Azyr, and many of the merchants and lords from the realm prefer to use it in transactions and when paying employees, regardless of their Realm of origin.[1b][30a][31]

In the Bone Desert coinage is still widespread enough that a counterfeiting enterprise has arisen around it. These counterfeit coins are made by renegades of the Jelali Banking Guild, the criminal network centred around Hazim's Parlour is connected to these renegades in some manner.[23a]

In regions dominated by Khornate warlords, like the Reaver Wastes of the Flamescar Plateau, the iconography stamped upon a coin is meaningless and the worth is determined by the weight of any given coin.[16b] Similarly Grave Coins, a common currency in the Realm of Shyish, are valued more for the Amethyst Magic they contain rather than the origins, denominations, or content of the coins themselves.[20a]

Not all coinage in the Mortal Realms is made of metal, other materials are also popular depending on the region, resources available, and other factors. In the Realm of Chamon the Free City of Ravensbach uses coins made of teakwood as legal tender. In the Realm of Shyish the mortals of the Underworld of Stygxx use coins made of ivory.[4b][18a] Ivory Pebbles are another variety of ivory coin.[4a] Stone coins with burning coals of Emberstone at the centre are known to exist as well, serving as a high-end currency like most other Realmstone currencies.[21a]

Realmstone

Types of Realmstone

Another common form of currency traded throughout the Mortal Realms is Realmstone, solidified magic. Each of the eight principal lores of Magic have a corresponding Realmstone; Aetherquartz for Hysh, Amberbone for Ghur, Celestium for Azyr, Chamonite for Chamon, Cyclestone for Ghyran, Emberstone for Aqshy, Falsestone for Ulgu, and Grave-sand for Shyish. Each is most commonly found in its corresponding Realm. Warpstone found predominantly in Blight City, Varanite from the Eightpoints, and Nullstone which is the Realmstone of the Aetheric Void are three other prominent types of Realmstone.[21a]

There is a myriad of forms and denominations with which Realmstone currencies appear in markets across the Mortal Realms. These can range from raw shards, cut gems, singular grains held in glass containers, coins with a small chunk of Realmstone set in the centre, and many other strange, and often esoteric, forms.[21a]

Due to the rarity and difficulty of acquiring Realmstone, all types tend to serve as high-end currencies when used as such, with even small shards and grains used most often used for massive transactions between empires rather than legal tender for common markets and services. Though in those places where the supply of Realmstone is stable, such as settlements that are established to mine it, it serves as an alternative to more common currencies such as Aqua Ghyranis.[21a]

While Varanite is mostly only used as a currency among the warbands of the Eightpoints and Warpstone mainly only by the verminous Skaven, the other nine major varieties of Realmstone are accepted in all eight Mortal Realms. The value of each type varies wildly from region to region, though the difficulty in acquiring all of these substances and their high demand tends to cause their values to roughly average out to roughly equal prices.[21a]

Aqua Ghyranis, which is one of the most commonly traded currencies across the Mortal Realms, especially throughout Sigmar's Empire, is known to be a heavily diluted form of Cyclestone.[21a]

Currencies of Death

To the majority undead that now dominate the Underworlds of Shyish fair commerce and trade are alien concepts. For most Nagash has freed them from their natural pangs of hunger and thirst, baubles hold little value to most Undead, and only a rare few would consider exploiting wealth to improve their afterlives. Nevertheless, trade has taken root, especially within those cities and vassal nations where mortals can be found. The currencies traded among the Grand Alliance of Death are often macabre, some of the most common being bones, blood, and coins infused with necromantic power.[20a]

Bones serve as the state currency and chief building material of the ever-expanding Ossiarch Empire. Throughout the empire, its vassal nations, and neighbouring lands the dreaded Bone-tithe must be paid, with even Deathrattle Kingdoms and Flesh-Eater Courts subjected to the tithe. Purebone serves as a somewhat measurable form of bone currency used throughout the empire.[12a][20a]

Blood has become one of the most commonly traded currencies of the Realm of Death. Soulblight Vampires require blood to survive due to the curse upon their souls and most prefer blood taken from mortals, not always from the willing. Thus Spiceblood, blood flavoured in myriad ways, has become commonly traded throughout their domains.[20a] During the occupation of Radukar and his Thirsting Court, blood was used within the city of Ulfenkarn as a means for mortals to buy food or rent out room and board, many business owners would use this acquired blood to excuse themselves from personally paying the blood tithe; acting as both currency and commodity.[10b][10c]

Grave Coins are the third common currency used by the Forces of Death. These are coins that were buried or entombed alongside the dead during funerary rites and have, over the years, been imbued with necromantic power.[20a]

Currencies of Destruction

Commerce is often informal, pragmatic, and violent among the tribes, clans, and mobs that fall into the Grand Alliance of Destruction and the currencies that take root in their societies more often than not are commodities or loot taken from brawls and conquests.[42a]

Teef, the largest and most impressive teeth taken from a creature's mouth, serve as common currency among the Orruk Warclans. Teef can be attained through many of the most beloved activities that Orruks partake in, whether it be through violence in battle or sadistic dentistry, thus allowing Orruks to monetize their brutal and cunning nature.[42a]

Shrooms, a term collectively referring to any fungi with qualities that Grots find entertaining, such as toxicity, explosiveness, or hallucinogens, are the most commonly traded currency used by the Grots of the Gloomspite Gitz. There are no standard denominations for shrooms, as the variety of fungi in the Mortal Realms is staggering and ever-increasing.[42a]

Meat of all variety is valued above all else within the Mawtribes and although Ogors are willing to accept any currency in payment for their services, they choose to use meat amongst themselves as it is what they would inevitably buy anyway. As fresh meat has a limited lifespan, Ogors usually trade their meat frozen, dried, or rotten.[42a]

Trophies are among the most esoteric currencies used by the forces of Destruction, being mementoes taken from battle. Trophies can take any number of forms, with severed heads, broken horns, and skulls from beasts being common. The value of trophies comes not from intrinsic worth, but instead from the story that surrounds them. Hobgrots are known to trade trophies often, eagerly exaggerating the tales behind them.[42a]

Quicksilver is used as a currency by some of the inhabitants of Skrappa Spill, including Skragrott the Loonking himself.[39]

Scrips

A Scrip is a substitute for legal tender that can be exchanged for goods and commerce.[22a][38a] Caravan-Masters bound for the Free City of Greywater Fastness will often carry paper scrips with them to do trade in the city.[38a] Market Scrips are regularly exchanged for goods in the despicable and vile city of Carngrad.[22a]

The Bastion Artefacts Retrievals Guild, one of the most despised institutions of the city of Bastion in the Skyshoals, offers Trade Tokens in exchange for artefacts of the Old Achromian Empire. These are largely considered worthless to both the skyfarers who retrieve said artefacts and most of the vendors within the city, with only a select few businesses willing to take them.[48c]

In the Free City of Greywater Fastness most workers are paid modest or decent wages, though in many cases this comes in the form of scrip usable only in markets and stores owned by the company they work for. These scrips most often come in the form of musket balls or other ammunition stamped with the sigil of an Ironweld Guild.[49a]

Other

Gold is widely known to be the only payment accepted by the lodges of the Fyreslayers and as such it is stockpiled by all nations and cities, such as the Cities of Sigmar, that desire to hire them as mercenaries, and by any who suspect they may become desperate enough to do so in the future.[11a]

In many Chaos aligned cities, such as Carngrad and Nochseed, grains of gold are one of the many forms of currency traded among the lords and merchants of the cities.[41a]

In the Realm of Azyr the economy is based on a system of weighted gems and jewels. The settlers who helped found the Cities of Sigmar in the Great Parch brought this monetary system with them, though many locals, such as the Bataari, prefer their long-established barter systems.[1b]

In the Kharadron Empire wealth is measured in Aether-gold Shares, as Aether-gold is by far the most valued resource in the empire, which also serve as a currency within the Sky-ports.[40a][40b]

Seashells are used as a form of currency within the Enclave of Briomdar. They can be exchanged for goods and services in the markets of the enclaves. These shells are notable for having the soul imprints of the enclave's famed leaders on them.[9a]

Within the Six Circles, the domains of Slaanesh in the Realm of Chaos, few currencies hold more value than that of truths pried from dying foes. Keepers of Secrets greatly value these secret truths and hold those who bring such secrets to them in high regard.[19a]

The primary and most widespread currency accepted by the markets, towns, and warbands of the Allpoints are weapons, with the extensive barter pits in Carngrad being full of them.[28a]

Standard Exchange Rates

The standard currency of many of the Cities of Sigmar is the life-giving water known as Aqua Ghyranis. With the most commonly accepted units of the currency being Drops, Phials, and Spheres.

While the values can fluctuate from city to city, the table below lists off the most common units of Aqua Ghyranis as of the Arcanum Optimar, the era that followed the devastation of the Necroquake[1a]:

Exchange Rate of Aqua Ghyranis
1 sphere = 1 sphere
= 10 phials
= 100 drops

Exchange Rates of Common Currencies

The following table contains a list of approximate values of other currencies during the Arcanum Optimar compared against Aqua Ghyranis. These values fluctuate greatly from Realm to Realm, nation to nation, region to region. For example in the Realm of Shyish the value of Aqua Ghyranis is higher in an afterlife wherein still living mortals reside, than in one mostly dominated by the dead. Though blood is useless as a currency in most cases, it is highly valued in lands dominated by Soulblight Vampires. [20a][42a]:

Exchange Rate of Mortal Realms Currencies During the Arcanum Optimar:
1 sphere = 1 glimmering[8a]
= 1 ingot of gold bullion[11a]
1 phial = 1 kilobar of gold[11a]

Exchange Rates of Esoteric Currencies During the Arcanum Optimar

Throughout the Mortal Realms there exist many strange and esoteric currencies that largely hold value only to certain nations, cultures, and peoples, such as the Teef valued by Orruks, the Purebone used by certain Ossiarch Bonereapers, the trophies traded among the Forces of Destruction whose true value revolves around the story behind each piece, or Grave Coins hoarded by Necromancers. The list below is a rough approximation of the exchange rates, compared against Aqua Ghyranis, that these currencies had during the Arcanum Optimar, though as with all examples on these lists the values can fluctuate significantly across the Realms: [20a][42a]:

Exchange Rates of Esoteric Currencies During the Arcanum Optimar :
1 drop = 1 digit of Purebone[20a]
= One vial of Spiceblood[20a]
= 1 Grave Coin clipping[20a]
= 1 Toof taken from any medium-sized or smaller creature[42a]
= 1 Common Shroom[42a]
= 1 Trophy commemorating a forgettable fight[42a]
1 phial = 1 complete limb of Purebone[20a]
= 1 goblet of Spiceblood[20a]
= 1 Grave Coin[20a]
= 1 Toof taken from a large creature[42a]
= 1 Rare Shroom[42a]
= 1 Trophy commemorating a thrilling fight = 1 phial of Aqua Ghyranis[42a]
1 sphere = 1 Medium-sized skeleton of Purebone[20a]
= 1 bottle of Spiceblood[20a]
= 10 Grave Coins[20a]
= 1 Toof taken from an enormous creature[42a]
= 1 Trophy commemorating a truly momentous fight[42a]

Exchange Rates of Realmstone

Realmstone, rare and potent forms of pure crystallized magic, have long persisted as a form of currency throughout all the Realms, outlasting empires, ages, and even gods. Below is a table showing the equivalent exchange rates of the most common types of pure Realmstone compared to Aqua Ghyranis, though values will double for any Realmstone being exchanged in markets outside its Realm of origin, except Nullstone which can be found in abundance across the cosmos. Though these are not fixed rates, and values can vary wildly from region to region.[21a]

Exchange Rates of Realmstone During the Arcanum Optimar :
300 Drops of Aqua Ghyranis = 1 gem (1 oz.) of Aetherquartz[21a]
= 1 shard (1 oz.) of Amberbone[21a]
= 1 grain of Celestium[21a]
= 1 fluid oz. of Chamonite[21a]
= 1 chip (1 oz.) of Cyclestone[21a]
= 1 coal (1 oz.) of Emberstone[21a]
= 1 wisp of (immeasurable) Falsestone[21a]
= 1 grain of Grave-sand[21a]
= 1 gem (1 oz.) of Warpstone[21a]
= 1 fluid oz. of Varanite[21a]
= 1 shard (1 oz.) of Nullstone[21a]

History

Age of Myth

Throughout the Age of Myth many different systems of currency and trade arose across the burgeoning civilizations of the Mortal Realms. It was during this era that Aqua Ghyranis first arose as a prominent currency in the Great Parch, though localized in the central arid regions of the Parch, arriving through the Realmgate that would come to be known as the Stormrift Realmgate in the [[Age of Sigmar.[13a][13b][13c][13d]

Coinage was also popular all across the continents of the Great Parch. With nations and peoples in Aspiria, Aridian, Bataar, and the Flamescar Plateau all accepting coins as a form of legal tender.[35b][35c]

The myriad peoples, nations, and races that dwell in the Everspring Swathe develop an honour system that exchanges time, in the form of labour, for goods and services. Swathers would devote a minute, an hour, a day, or even a week of hard labour to gain what others would buy with coin. This system was controlled only by oral tradition and hearsay.[13d]

In the Godwrought Isles of the Realm of Chamon, the burgeoning nations of Duardin, Humans, and Gholemkind began to use the substance known as Chamonite, the Realmstone of Chamon, as a major currency. A single droplet was as valuable as a chest full of gold coin.[13a]

Coinage was also used throughout the Godwrought Isles and the Mintners of Azgal's Royal Orchard grew wealthy and influential thanks to the Glinting Groves, where they harvested coin, and through money-lending.[13a]

Aetherquartz arose as a mainstay and widespread currency traded throughout the lands of the Realm of Hysh. These currencies most often came in the form of beads, jewels, and necklaces.[13b]

Age of Sigmar

In the early days of the Age of Sigmar barter economies arose within many cities and nations. Eventually, coinage was trialled as the primary currency across the great nations of Order, with the Kharadron Overlords in particular enthusiastically backing the practice. The universal currency system that the Kharadron attempted to institute would eventually collapse due to the Goldflood, an event involving heavy inflation of metallic coins.[27a][51a]

As a result the barter system once again rose to the top once again. Eventually, a new currency arose in the form of Aqua Ghyranis, special water from the Realm of Ghyran prized for its healing properties. Aqua Ghyranis is widely exchanged between people and merchants of the Cities of Sigmar[1a], Kharadron Overlords[6a], Sylvaneth Enclaves, mortal kingdoms vassalized by the nations of death[20a], and many others across the realms.[27a]

Other currencies have also risen to dominance as well, though not all are as widespread as Aqua Ghyranis. Such as the much-coveted Glimmerings of Excelsis, the Spiceblood coveted by Soulblight Vampires, Purebone which serves as a state currency of the Empire of Ossia, varied Realmstone currencies, Charm-silver tokens of Lethis, and many others.[1a][20a][21a][27a][50a]

In spite of the Goldflood, and the dominance that Kharadron Overlords have over the Spiral Crux and its precious metals, currencies in the form of precious metals and metallic coinage still persist.[11a][20a][27a] This is partially due to the Fyreslayers who in their eternal quest for Ur-Gold refuse to be paid in anything but gold and Ur-Gold.[11a] Non-metallic coins have also arisen in various regions across the realms.[4b][18a][21a]

The golden coinage of the Kharadron themselves has yet to recover after the Goldflood and massive stockpiles of mostly useless coins have been amassed throughout the Skyports. These are often used to pay for Gargant mercenaries, who value the enrapturing luster of the tokens more than their contents or what is stamped upon them.[51a]

List of Known Currencies

List of Realmstone Currencies

Any currency that is a form of Realmstone or made of Realmstone. Currencies made of Realmstone.[1a] In the Age of Sigmar Realmstone often serves as an alternative currency, though there are exceptions where it is traded as a central currency, to more traditional currencies such as Aqua Ghyranis.[15a][21a] Of the known types of Realmstone, the main eight are accepted as currencies in all the Mortal Realms, as is the anti-magical Nulstone, the same may not necessarily apply to other forms such as the Chaos-tainted varieties known as Warpstone and Varanite.[21a]

  • Aetherquartz: Aetherquartz became a widespread currency in the nations of the Realm of Light, not long after the seers of the realm learned to harness the light of Hysh into special prisms. Aetherquartz traded in markets most often comes in the form of small gems. But gem-like beads, jewels, and necklaces are.[13b]
  • Amberbone: The Realmstone of Ghur is most often used as a currency in the form of shards. These shards are heavily circulated among Ogors and Orruks through a simple system of gift-giving, trading favours, and debt.[21a] The Free Peoples of the Cities of Sigmar also value the shards as a currency, particularly in Thondia.[44a]
  • Celestium: A common means of using Celestium as a currency involves a singular grain placed in a glass sphere full of water. A blue-white light glimmers within the water so long as the grain of Celestium remains.[21a]
  • Chamonite: After its discovery in the Age of Myth, Chamonite became a major currency for many of the nations and empires of the Spiral Crux.[13a] Tempered glass spheres containing orbs of Chamonite often serve as currency, they are most often found in cities with strong alchemical traditions.[21a]
  • Cyclestone: Fragments of Cyclestone are used by Sylvaneth, begrudgingly, when bartering with outsiders.[21a]
  • Emberstone: As with all forms of Realmstone, Emberstone is valued as a currency in its own right, most often taking the form of burning coals. Occasionally, ore containing Emberstone is turned into stone coins, with a lump of tiny, smouldering Emberstone coal at the centre.[21a]
  • Falsestone: Falsestone wisps, which difficult to discern and measure, are traded heavily in the Realm of Ulgu, typically in transactions involving complicated bluffs and counter-bluffs.[21a]
  • Grave-sand: Grave-sand is most often used as a currency by the inhabitants of Realm of Shyish. Typically a singular grain is stored within an hourglass no bigger than a thimble. It is easily discernible among the other particles in the hourglass due to its amethyst hue and glowing nature.[21a]
  • Nullstone: By far the most stable variety of realmstone currency. Such currency often comes in the form of rainbow-hued shards and pebbles.[21a]
  • Varanite: Lumps of Varanite, which have been cooled and solidified, are used as tribute by those tribes warring across the Eightpoints. Varanite is often measured in fluid ounces.[21a]
  • Warpstone: Warpstone is the only currency used within the Blight City, though it comes in a variety of forms including flakes, chips, and powder.[21a]

List of Commodity Currencies

Blue Gorkshrooms and Green Morkshrooms, two well-known types of shrooms

Any form of currency whose value is derived from the material it is made of. These can range from trade goods such as silk and Shyish black-salt to more esoteric forms such as blood, valued by Vampires of the Soulblight Dynasties and Glimmerings, prophetic shards of the Spear of Mallus valued by the Free Peoples.[1a][6a][20a]

  • Aether-gold Ingots: Aether-gold Ingots, or Power Ingots, are sealed canisters containing Aether-gold that are needed to power the Aether-rigs of Kharadron. These batteries can also be found in the markets of some Free Cities as a form of currency, even in banks run by Kharadron.[1a][6a]
  • Bataari Firesilk: Bataari Firesilk, or simply Firesilk, is a form of commodity currency used by the Bataari of Floating Market and their trading partners, which includes members of the Kharadron Empire and Free Cities of Sigmar such as Brightspear. Many banks and counting houses, such as the Exchange in Brightspear, even count it among the currencies they readily exchange.[6a]
  • Blood: Soulblight Vampires crave blood, and so in nations where they rule it often serves as currency. During Radukar's occupation of Ulfenkarn blood was taken as taxes in lieu of other forms of currency, and most crimes required a, usually fatal, a tithe of blood.[10b][10c][20a]
    • Spiceblood: Spiceblood is bottled blood that has been given flavour through various mundane and exotic methods. It is commonly traded among the mortal peasants that reside in nations ruled over by vampires.[20a]
  • Bones: Within the Ossiarch Empire bones are a vital resource needed to expand the empire and create its legions, as well as a material for art and construction. Bones also serve as the state currency for the empire, often traded to accrue influence and secrets.[12a][20a]
    • Purebone: Bone taken exclusively from mortals that perished at their prime, in good health and condition.[20a]
  • Charm-silver: Crescent-shaped charms made from bone, stamped with a hound-head crest, created by Lethisian charm-makers. The currency is widely accepted as legal tender in settlements all across the Mortal Realms.[50a]
  • Dragon Hatchling Scales: Iridescent scales accepted as legal tender in the Free City of Excelsis.[2a]
  • Gemstones: In the Mortal Realms precious stones are often traded and exchanged for goods and services, in lieu of more conventional currencies.[1b][43a][46b]
  • Glimmerings: The standard currency of Excelsis is known as Glimmerings. Shards of the Spear of Mallus that grant minor prophetic visions to those that imbibe the magic within them.[1a]
  • Gold: A precious metal that is often traded in the form of bullion, coins, kilobars, and other forms.[2b][5a][7a][11a]
  • Gold Bullion: Bullion is metal that has been moulded into bars or ingots, as a method of storing and maintaining the material. Gold is often worked into bullion by the Free Cities of Sigmar. Occasionally Ur-Gold can be found mixed in with the more mundane variety.[5a]
  • Gold Kilobars: A kilobar made of gold is considered to be worth as much as a phial of Aqua Ghyranis. [11a]
  • Meat: Though Ogors are willing to accept any currency in the Realms, from the most mundane to the most esoteric, when working for other peoples, among their own Mawtribes they primarily use meat, which they typically buy with their earnings anyway, as an intermediary for trades.[42a]
  • Quicksilver: A metallic, alchemical substance that is occasionally used as a currency.[2a][39]
  • Shyish black-salt: Is yet another type of commodity currency found in the markets of the Free Cities, prized for its use as an exceptional preservative.[6a]
  • Silver: A precious metal that is valued in some places across the Realms.[1d][27a] It is also known to be minted into coins.[10d][24a]
  • Shrooms: The Grots of the Gloomspite Gitz place great value in the myriad types of hallucinogenic, toxic, explosive, and entertaining fungi that grow in the clammy places of the Mortal Realms. These are roughly divided into two categories by Grots,, common and rare, with any fungi that a grot doesn't recognize immediately falling into the common category.[42a]
  • Torope Gold: Torope Gold is a form of gold mined from the great turtles of the Black Marsh Barony in the Realm of Ghur. The material on its own is valued as a currency but is also minted into coins.[2b]
  • Trade beads: Beads that are used as a form of currency.[22b]
  • Ur-Gold: This precious metal is highly valued by the Fyreslayers, for the substance contains motes of Grimnir's power. It can often be found in markets across the Mortal Realms, much to the chagrin of some Fyreslayers, though oftentimes it is mistaken for common gold by non-Fyreslayers.[8a][11a]
    • Ur-Gold Coins: Coins minted from Ur-Gold is one of the most common ways the substance is circulated throughout the Realms, albeit often unknowingly to all but the Fyreslayers who seek to acquire it by any means necessary.[11a]
    • Ur-Gold Ingots: Ingots containing traces of Ur-Gold is one of the most common ways the substance is circulated throughout the Realms, albeit often unknowingly to all but the Fyreslayers who seek to acquire it by any means necessary.[11a]
  • Water: Throughout much of the Great Parch water is considered more precious than gold.[13c][47a]
    • Aqua Ghyranis: The life-giving waters, which contain trace amounts of Cyclestone, of Ghyran are often placed into glass containers and used as a commodity currency. The most common units of this currency are Drops, Phials, and Spheres. The water is also highly valued for its healing and curative effects, as it can heal many sicknesses, mend wounds, and purify Chaos taint. In the islands of the Aspitrides it is known as Goodwater.[1a][21a][47a]
  • Whalebone: In the Cursed City of Ulfenkarn whalebone is used as a currency.[10a]

List of Coinage

Any form of currency worked into the form of a coin.[20a][21a][27a] In the Mortal Realms coins are made from a wide range of material ranging from copper, silver, gold, meteoric iron, Sigmarite, iron, ivory, teakwood, and even Realmstone.[2a][3][4a][4b][7a][18a][21a][24a][34a] While commonly shaped into the shape of a small disc, coins come in all manner of shapes such as triangles and squares.[35a][48a]

List of Representative Currency

A representative currency is any form of currency of medium of exchange that represents something of value but does not necessarily have intrinsic value in and of itself.[32a]

List of Supplementary Currency

Any form of legal tender that is used to supplement more traditional currencies. Such currencies tend to have limited use, being accepted only by a select few participating markets or stores. As such they are typically considered less valuable than other forms of currency.[48c][49a]

  • Scrip: Scrips come in a variety of forms, and are widely used throughout the Mortal Realms, though no matter the form they come in they are used in substitution for more established forms of currencies. In the Free City of Greywater Fastness many companies pay employees in scrips that take the form of musket balls, or other ammunition, useable only in stores and markets owned by the same company. Even the dread city of Carngrad has a system of market scrips in place.[22a][38a][49a]
  • Trade Token: A form of supplementary currency paid out by the Bastion Artefacts Retrievals Guild in exchange for artefacts from the Old Achromian Empire. Considered to be of little value by explorers and treasure hunters, as few businesses in Bastion accept them.[48c]
